Félix Martín Doctoral Seminar
Universidad de Salamanca
March 14-15, 2024
The Spanish Association for American Studies invites graduate students engaged in Ph.D. research to participate in the Félix Martín Doctoral Seminar to take place every two years alternating with the year of the celebration of the SAAS Conference. The seminar aims to provide a space for Ph.D. students to present and discuss their current research in a more relaxed environment than that of a full conference panel and in dialogue with other doctoral students in a highly stimulating and collaborative environment. Participating students must be enrolled in a doctoral program and, preferably, in their second year of doctoral research. MA students and doctoral students in their first year of doctoral research interested in attending the seminar are welcome to send their proposal to the “Morning Song” session (after Sylvia Plath’s poem), where more preliminary research will be discussed.
Student presentations at the Doctoral Seminar should deal with the issues addressed or hypotheses tested in the dissertation, the results so far obtained, and above all the methodology applied, with the purpose of gaining specific feedback from peers and more established scholars in the field. Each presentation will last 10-15 minutes, followed by additional time for discussion.
The Seminar will be organized in separate discussion groups, depending on the number of participants, and will be chaired by a Doctor nominated by the organizing committee. Some of these sessions might take place online or follow a hybrid format to ensure broad participation. Presentation at a Doctoral Seminar session will not exclude participation in and presenting at other seminars at the Conference the following year.
Proposals should be sent electronically to saasyoungscholars@gmail.com by November 30, 2023. These should include a summary of the project (of no more than 500 words), indicating:
- The main topic and issues, including the thesis proposed/hypothesis defended.
- The methodology (theoretical tools and standpoints).
- Where relevant, the corpus under consideration.
- The results so far obtained.
Please indicate whether you will attend the seminar online or in-person in your email.
MA and first-year Ph.D. students interested in participating in the seminar should also send their proposals to the email address mentioned above with the subject “SAAS YS’ Félix Martín Doctoral Seminar – Morning Song session.” Proposals should adhere to the guidelines mentioned above.
This seminar is established to honor the memory of Prof. Félix Martín, paying tribute to his immense academic and pedagogical contributions. Prof. Martín, who passed earlier this year, was a pioneer in the field of American Studies in Spain and will be dearly missed.
